Psst, Editors: You Can Now Add an AI Policy to Your Listing

Chill Subs’s Editors Have Issues is back. And we have some thoughts.

You’ve probably heard about the latest AI kerfluffle. ICYMI, a story that was among five regional winners of the Commonwealth Foundation Short Story Prize—and published on Granta’s website—may have been written by AI. The publishers behind Granta say, “Perhaps we will never know.”

Anxiety around AI, particularly for creative folks, is only growing. It makes sense, then, that writers want to know where the lit mags they’re submitting to stand on AI.

Which brings us, quite naturally, to our next point: You can now add your AI policy directly to your Chill Subs listing. Go have a look-see over in your editor panel. Under “My Listings,” click Edit Magazine, select Guidelines on the left, and scroll down to Policies.

Your AI policy can be as simple or grandiose as you’d like. Just be sure to include some basics, like whether you accept work that uses AI at any stage or whether you draw a line between generative AI and AI-powered tools like grammar checkers.

You can go for something simple, like ALOCASIA:

“We do not accept AI-generated or AI-assisted writing or art.”

Or you can get into the nitty-gritty, like Mud Season Review:

“At Mud Season Review, we celebrate the unique voice and creativity of human authors. While we acknowledge the potential of AI as a tool for artistic exploration, we believe in preserving the essence of human expression in writing. Therefore, we do not accept submissions that are predominantly generated by artificial intelligence. If AI is used as a supplementary tool in the creative process, we encourage authors to disclose and explain its role in their submission notes.”
