Bowling Green State University MFA

Founded in 1967, BGSU’s creative writing program offers a BFA and an MFA. BGSU is home to Mid-American Review and the undergraduate journal Prairie Margins. Graduates have won such awards as the Yale Younger Poets Award, the Guggenheim, NEA Individual Artist Fellowships, and the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction. The program is founded on small class sizes, personal attention from faculty mentors, and a focus on helping students develop their individual voices. Most students are fully funded with a teaching assistantship; many are offered the chance to teach creative writing courses in their second year or to take an editorial leadership role with Mid-American Review. The program offers a lively, well-attended weekly reading series featuring students, faculty, and accomplished visiting writers. BGSU is in the process of hiring a fiction professor with expertise and a publishing record in speculative fiction, so fiction students entering in Fall 2026 will have the opportunity to study and be well-supported in genres such as sci fi and fantasy.
